Commenting on its figures (page five) Gateway 2000 Inc says it shipped more than 236,000 personal computers in the second quarter, but it does not expect to return to a 9% operating margin in the second half, although it expects positive results from its efforts to improve product transitions, sales forecasting and inventory management; in the second quarter, Pentium-based machines made up about 26% of total units shipped, up from about 17% in the previous quarter; desktops accounted for 92% of units shipped; European sales totalled $34m, up 6.3% from the first quarter, and European operations saw an operating profit in the latest quarter.
