There have been several false dawns in IBM’s three years of tribulations so few are pinning too much hope of sustained recovery from one quarter’s positive figures – but on the upside Gartner Securities reckons that the MVS/ESA announcement unlocked potentially very substantial demand for the 3090, pointing out that there are still $11,000m of 308X machines out there whose users may now be persuaded by ESA to upgrade to 3090; that many are taking the plunge is indicated by the fact that according to Gartner, used 308X prices have plunged 60% over the past six months after standing firm for the previous 12.
