The Gartner Group looks set to put IBM Corp’s nose out of joint with a November research note, Large Systems Performance Issues: IBM and Amdahl Corp have been in noisy and prolonged disagreement over the comparative performance of their 3090-600J and 5995-1400 respectively, and Gartner looks to have fallen in with Amdahl’s claims that the 1400 lags the 600J by around 8%, not the whopping 25% claimed by IBM; Gartner contacted 50 customers and came to the conclusion that IBM’s Large Systems Performance Reference statistics are fine for engineering measurements, but when running a user workload, the difference is considerably less and is much nearer the 8% Amdahl claims.
