Ottawa, Ontario-based Gandalf Technologies Inc announced the LANline 5242i bridge, aiming it at the remote office requiring twin-channel Integrated Services Digital Network links to the head office, local area network. According to the company, a single 5242i can link up to 10 10Base-T remote nodes to a head office via its LANline 5240i or 5225i intelligent bridges or its Xpressway Central hubs. Gandalf says that its 8:1 compression algorithm enables the bridge to provide 512Kbps throughput down a single 64Kbps ISDN channel. Data connection is said to be transparent to users, who need only to request a remote Internet Protocol or Internet Packet Exchange address, adds the company. In addition, it features a speech channel to enable analogue devices, such as phones, facsimile machines and facsimile modems, to be connected at the same time, says Gandalf. According to the firm, an outgoing voice, fax or modem call automatically disconnects the second ISDN B channel if it is being used, becoming available again for local network traffic once the voice call is complete.
