GALILEO UNVEILS SECOND GENERATION FAST ETHERNET ASIC CHIPSET

By CBR Staff Writer

Chip designer Galileo Technology Inc, has announced new Fast Ethernet ASIC chipsets that are two thirds of the price of existing chipsets. The chipset is the second generation of Galileo’s Fast Ethernet chip design, with the old design improved with the number of Ethernet ports per chip doubled from two to four, and the switching speed increased to 2.4 million packets per second. The GT-48004A chip is shipping in sample quantities in December, and production qualities in the first quarter 1998. Galileo does not build its own chips, which are fabricated by the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. The chipset will be priced at $88 per chipset in 10,000 unit quantities.
