Croydon, Surrey-based Future Computers (Systems) Ltd, largest division of the UKP8m-a-year Future Holdings Group Plc has started shipments of its Windows NT-based 80486 machines: the company, which hopes to sell 30 a month for the first few months, will sell into large companies and to value-added resellers focusing on the telephony and voicemail markets; starting at UKP3,000 for an 80486 DX2/66 with 16Mb RAM (expandable to 128Mb) with 320Mb hard drive, Toshiba Corp double-speed CD-ROM and 3Com Corp Ethernet board, the system includes TCP/IP software and a preinstalled Personal version of Windows NT and 12 months warranty; one company source didn’t seem all that optimistic about NT’s short term success; OS/2 has really gotten its act together and Windows NT isn’t exactly the fastest operating system in the universe, he said, adding that volume may increase in the future; the company will follow with Advanced Server edition soon.
