FUJITSU TO MARKET AMDAHL MAINFRAMES IN JAPAN

By CBR Staff Writer

Rather than invite its Japanese users wedded to IBM’s MVS to run the operating system on its own top-end M-780 machine, which is IBM-compatible but has additional instructions, Fujitsu Ltd has decided to offer such customers the 5890 machines from its 46% affiliate Amdahl Corp. Fujitsu builds the CPU for the 5890 for integration into the finished system by Amdahl under a similar arrangement to the one under which it builds the Series 39 CPUs for ICL. Although Fujitsu’s and Amdahl’s mainframes are both IBM-compatible, they are designed quite independently by each firm.
