Fujitsu Ltd says the value of group overseas production in the fiscal year to March 31 1997 is likely to double from the previous year to $5.7bn as a result of the restructuring of its global production bases. Fujitsu has been actively moving production of components and peripherals for personal computers offshore in order to cut production costs. A Philippine hard disc drive plant began output in April at a rate of 200,000 units a month, and another disk plant is expected to begin operations in Vietnam in September. Fujitsu says it will also start increasing output at its semiconductor assembly plant in Malaysia to 16m units a month from the current 10m and begin semiconductor production at its new plant in Gresham, Oregon.
