Fujitsu Microelectronics Ltd plans to invest a further UKP30m in its microchip fabrication plant at Newton Aycliffe in County Durham: the factory currently produces 1.7m memory devices each month, and the company now plans to ramp this up to 2m per month; the new investment will be used to install extra production equipment within the existing buildings over the next few months; the plant will continue to focus exclusively on 4M-bit DRAM production, although the company is working on plans for trial production of 16M-bit DRAMs towards the end of the year; Fujitsu has already invested UKP285m in the plant, which started production in 1991.
