Fujitsu Ltd and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd have developed and will soon begin sample shipments in Japan of a new LSI device for multimedia image processing. Based on the MPEG-2 protocol, the new MB86365, expands and decodes compressed digital images. It can be used for regenerating both NTSC and PAL televison standard and other images. The MB86365 is fabricated in 0.5 micron CMOS technology, three-layer wiring and Fujitsu-developed architecture to achieve high image quality. All circuits necessary for signal expansion and decoding have been integrated on a single chip, so that by attaching a general purpose dynamic RAM it is possible to achieve decoding and regeneration of compressed digital image dat at up to 20M-bits per second. Sample shipments of the MB86365 in the Japanese market are due this month, with volume shipment to begin in June. Availability in markets outside Japan is being considered for late 1995.
