FUJITSU CONSIDERS MARKETING AMDAHL’S 5890 IN JAPAN

By CBR Staff Writer

Despite a reported denial of the story, Fujitsu Ltd has confirmed that, as we reported (CI No 896), it is considering marketing Amdahl Corp 5890 3090-class mainframes in Japan: the reason is believed to be that Fujitsu and IBM have still not thrashed out financial terms under which the Japanese company may develop its own version of MVS/XA and MVS/ESA, and Fujitsu needs the Amdahl machines to plug the gap; despite the fact that the Amdahl machines are built in California – and Ireland – out of subsassemblies manufactured by Fujitsu, the dollar-yen rate means that even reimporting the finished machines into Japan will enable significantly lower prices than if the machines were built solely in Japan; Fujitsu owns 46% of Amdahl.
