The trial date for the Federal Trade Commission’s anti-trust suit against Intel Corp has been moved from January 12 1999 (CI No 3,451) to February 23. However, a spokesperson for the FTC said that the date was not set in stone and could change again. The spokesperson would not comment on press reports that the case had widened after unnamed graphics chips companies called for the FTC to further examine Intel’s moves in the graphics chip market. Jon Latta, an industry analyst who was involved in allegations about Intel’s selling of its i470 graphics chip in June (CI No 3,428) doubts that a case could be made in the graphics arena saying that it would be difficult for the FTC to make a case about [Intel’s] market dominance – it has not achieved that. However, Latta says that Intel’s future strategy could bring further clashes with the FTC, claiming there is potential for significant issues with Intel’s integration of graphics with core logic in Whitney (CI No 3,456). However, this not been formally announced by Intel and it is unlikely that the FTC could do anything on a product that has not been released.
