French Telecom equipment maker Alcatel has stated that it’s primary objective in its mobile handset business is to play a key role in the consolidation of that sector.

At a press conference at the Anglo-American Press Association briefing; chairman Serge Tchuruk said the company did not have the critical depth in handsets of competitors like Nokia and Motorola.

This is a business which has to be a large-scale business so I believe you will see the market consolidate, Tchuruk said. I never said Alcatel could play its own hand, but we would like to play an active role in how this consolidation takes place.

When a reporter asked if the company was 100% committed to the business, Tchuruk replied: Not necessarily.

Nokia is far and away the world number one in mobile handsets, in front of Motorola. In current league tables France Telecom lies seventh. Businesses are increasingly moving from and entering various sectors in a hope to gain revenue, while outsourcing production to lower costs.
