France’s Syndicat national des Fabricants d’ensembles Informatique, de Bureautique et de leurs applications telematiques – Union of Computers and Office Equipment Manufacturers – has now completed itc sums for 1989 and finds that total turnover in the sector rose 11.1% to the equivalent of $13,000m – with $4,500m exported. Importers’ turnover was $3,630m, with $210m re-exported; service companies did $6,670m with $300m exported. French customs report that the sector deficit was $2,830m. Mainframe shipments in 1989 were 529, up from 450 in 1988; mid-range machines were scarcely changed 1,141 against 1,131, and small systems sales were 20,116, up from 18,737. Ships of very small systems were 17,280, up from 14,281. Sales of desktop micros totalled 266,000, up from 210,000, and laptop sales soared to 61,600 from 40,800 in 1988.
