FRENCH COMPANY SUSPENDS GALLIUM ARSENIDE PRODUCTION

Demand for gallium arsenide has dropped after strong growth in 1994 and 1995, and French chemical giant Rhone-Poulenc SA has suspended production at its Pinjarra plant on Western Australia, saying the capacity of its French and German plants will be enough to meet demand. Use in high-frequency integrated circuits has in fact increased, but not enough to offset the decline in demand for light-emitting diodes, the main market for the product.
