Just two weeks after Tiny Computers Ltd dropped its free PC offer due to little demand for the unremarkable low-spec box on offer, another similar deal has cropped up, this time offering a top of the range Pentium III machine. But it’s only available to 17,000 UK dairy farmers.

National Milk Records Ltd, the UK’s leading supplier of livestock information services, has teamed up with PC retailer Gateway Inc to offer PCs with PIII 450 processors, 64Mb RAM, 6.8Gb hard drive, graphics card, sound card, speakers, monitor and keyboard. The boxes will be pre-installed with Gateway’s Gateway.net internet access software.

To qualify for the deal, dairy farmers must take out a 3-year subscription to NMR’s farm management software for 32 pounds ($51) per month, or a total of 1,152 pounds ($1,850). NMR says farmers will be able to save time and money spent on paperwork by using its impelPro software, as well as being able to check market information on its own Farm Express web site.
