The Swiss bank mentioned in yesterday’s issue which nearly became the victim of a UKP32m computer fraud – up from UKP27m – note overnight inflation – has been identified as the Union Bank of Switzerland, and the City Fraud Squad is questioning an unidentified British employee of the bank, while two people, one Greek and one French, have been arrested by the police in the Swiss canton of Vaud; the attempted transfer – via the Swift network – was to a branch of the Credit Suisse in Nyon, near Lake Lemain but the sting failed completely and all parties bar the conspirators are delighted that the fraud was prevented by a computer alarm and the bank’s security system; there is concern however, that the incriminating telex may have been lost.
