INRIA, France’s National Institute for Computer Science and Automation, and Rank Xerox SA, announced a partnership to advance electronic document processing technology. With an eye particularly on digital, or virtual, library services, the two organizations intend to apply Rank Xerox technologies and INRIA research results to develop innovative applications. Their endeavors will address the areas of document creation using authoring, translation and document assembling tools, and the automatic creation of terminology dictionaries; document storage and easy information retrieval, using compression, indexing and intelligent search and retrieval tools, including multi-lingual search engines; document visualization, using high-resolution browsers and visualizers; content manipulation, using automatic summarization and translation tools; copyright management, security and authentication tools for the distribution of documents on the network; and process support technology for the coordination of distributed events.
