FRANCE TELECOM AND DEUTSCHE TELECOM PLAN NEWS CONFERENCE

A day that will live in infamy? Deutsche Bundespost Telekom and France Telecom plan a joint news conference on December 7 in Brussels and German postal minister Wolfgang Boetsch and France’s industry minister Gerard Longuet yesterday welcomed plans by France Telekom and Deutsche Bundespost Telekom to increase co-operation and said they did not infringe European competition rules: the plans should be seen against the backdrop of an alliance and partnership which could lead to a capital swap as soon as the legal status of the two firms allows it, the German postal ministry said; the link-up will encourage the development of trans-European telecommunications infrastructure, which is indispensable for the growth and competitiveness of European companies, it said; Telekom and France Telecom plan to expand and intensify their co-operation, which has been successful in the past, it said.
