Taiwanese tech major Foxconn has sued three Japanese firms for allegedly violating its patents that are used in LCD display products, a move signaling that the firm intends to aggressively protect its inventions in a highly competitive technology market.
The lawsuit was filed against Toshiba Corporation, Funai Electric Company and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation for allegedly infringing on Foxconn’s several film transistor patents.
The case was filed by Foxconn’s affiliate MiiCs & Partners, which helps firms to manage their patent portfolios, in Delaware’s Federal District Court, US.
This is the latest patent war between technology majors following the long running patent war between smartphone makers Apple and Samsung.
Foxconn’s patents case is related to LCD display products such as laptops, televisions, notebooks, tablets, smartphones.
An assembler for electronic companies, Foxconn owns several patents – it had over 64,000 patents and applied for another 128,000 earlier this year.
The company has been looking to branch out into sectors outside of manufacturing. The manufacturer of iPhones and iPads currently depends on Apple for almost 50% of its business.
