The UK Office of Telecommunications is recommending to the Department of Trade & Industry that it grant four Telepoint licences for the public cordless phone system, and according to the Financial Times, the Phonepoint consortium led by British Telecom is one of the four it is recommending from the 11 applications – with a fallback recommendation of a fifth name if the powerful lobby against British Telecom’s participation – on the grounds that it will take a substantial rake-off on all Telepoint calls regardless of the operators originating them wins the day.
