The mayor of Toulouse, Dominique Baudis, put down the first stone on Friday for Storage Technology Corp’s first European production and research facility just west of the city in southwest France. The 160,000 square foot administrative and manufacturing site is expected to create 500 jobs over the next five years, of which approximately 200 will be dedicated to new products research, said a spokeswoman for StorageTek at the company’s temporary offices in Toulouse. She said the site should have 100 employees by the end of next year. Baudis said the site would be put at StorageTek’s disposition in mid-1994 under an 18-year contract. StorageTek’s investment has been boosted by a total of $5.4m from the consulate general of Haute-Garonne, the Midi-Pyrenees region and the city of Toulouse.
