Human computer interaction company Fonix Corp has acquired the Papyrus group of companies from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Fonix, a Salt Lake City, Utah-based firm, sells speech recognition, speech synthesis, handwriting recognition, text-to-speech and intelligent agent software. The Papyrus acquisition, already completed, gives it access to printing and cursive handwriting recognition software for personal digital assistants, mobile phones and pen tablets. Papyrus customers include Philips NV, Hitachi Ltd, and the Olivetti & Oracle Research Laboratory in Cambridge, UK. The company has also been expanding its systems integration business, and has a partnership with online travel management company E-Travel. Papyrus shareowners receive promissory notes valued at $1.710m, and 3.1 million Fonix shares. No cash was involved.
