FOLIO OF PROVO LAUNCHES OPEN INFOBASE ARCHITECTURE FOR DEVELOPERS

By CBR Staff Writer

Provo, Utah-based Folio Corp has announced its Open Infobase Architecture, designed to enable third-party developers to create applications that take advantage of the company’s Infobase Technology services. The Open InfoBase Architecture consists of the Folio Infobase applications programming interface, for accessing more than 100 Folio Infobase services; the Folio Application Builder, a set of tools for designing and creating client applications; and the Folio Infobase Server for developing distributed client-server Infobase applications for wide and local area networks. Included with the Folio Infobase applications programming interface is the Infobase Adaptor, software defining communication between Infobase clients and Infobase servers. The Infobase Adaptor’s responsibilities include keeping a database of all known drivers and installing them as needed to service clients, using the drivers to locate and connect to Infobase servers, maintaining connections between the client and server, and providing a standard communication model between the Infobase client and server. The Folio Infobase applications programming interface will be published, documented and made available to qualified partners and third-party developers. The Folio Application Builder is a visual application development environment for developing custom Infobase applications. Folio Application Builder enables third-party developers to construct applications integrating components of the Folio Views Infobase Manager client along with other custom components using a Folio-provided scripting language. Example components include the Folio Rich Text Document Window, Table of Contents Window, Edit Controls, Dialog Boxes, and Menus. Folio Application Builder components will be compatible with the Microsoft Corp Object Linking & Embedding 2 component model. The Folio Infobase Server is the actual data storage and retrieval engine of the Folio Infobase applications programming interface. It provides access to and manipulation of the information contained in the Infobase through services such as text search and retrieval, data compression, real-time indexing and editing, flexible data fields, shadow file reconciliation, and security. The Infobase applications programming interface is scheduled to go into beta test by the end of the year, and to be generally released next year. The Folio Application Builder and Folio Infobase Server are scheduled for availability in 1995, the firm says.
