Dozens of American Airline flights were delayed after a software glitch on their iPads caused pilots to be unable to access in-flight information.
Andrea Hugeuly a spokeswoman for the airline, told The Verge that: "Some flights are experiencing an issue with a software application on pilot iPads."
"In some cases the flight has had to return to the gate to access a Wi-Fi connection to fix the issue."
The specific issue appears to be related to an app which the pilots use as an "electronic flight bag" that was introduced in 2013, replacing the paper manuals which weighed as much as 16kg.
The issue affected flights from a number of airports, including Chicago O’Hare, JFK in New York and Dallas/Fort Worth – the airline’s hub.
The security and stability of these iPads and apps will no doubt cause concern, particularly after warnings about in-flight Wi-Fi were raised in recent weeks.
