Hewlett-Packard Co tomorrow launches five new servers built around its Precision Architecture RISC technology. There are three additions to its HP-UX Unix-based HP 9000 Series 800, two in the proprietary MPE-based HP 3000 Series 900. The new Unix machines are expected to triple existing performance and deliver around 50 MIPS. There is a low-end Model 842S; the 852S, which with up to 64Mb RAM is likely to cost $150,000 or so – and the high-end 865S, which starts at $300,000. Hewlett-Packard will also announce HP SwitchOver/UX for the HP 9000 Series, which is claimed to provide automatic switchover from a primary to a standby processor. New HP 3000 Series systems are the Models 948 and 958, starting at $20,000 or so per transaction-per-second.
