The program is designed to facilitate research projects that can benefit from the computing power of using a computational grid and is now accepting applications from universities worldwide.

In order to qualify, prospective research projects should either directly concern research in distributed computing, or must possess significant computational requirements that are suited to running on a computational grid. At the conclusion of the research project the results will be published, with acknowledgement of xTier/GRID and Fitech Laboratories’ participation.

Fitech Laboratories will then supply qualified projects with a number of free academic licenses of xTier/GRID and, in certain cases, additional project support by providing xTier/GRID training and consulting. Fitech Laboratories can also help qualified projects to obtain financial assistance from participating non-profit funds.

The xTier/GRID provides an implementation for Enterprise Computational Grid (ECG) applications and defines the software infrastructure for developing Near Real Time (nRT) ECG applications. xTier/GRID solves computationally intensive tasks by splitting such tasks into multiple sub-tasks, executing each sub-task on a dedicated grid node in parallel and then aggregating the results to achieve a final result.

The main features of the xTier/GRID service include near Real-Time (nRT) support as well as traditional long-running jobs, and direct support for task splitting, topology management, result aggregation and failover.
