FIRST VIRTUAL REWRITING FVIPS INTERNET PAYMENT SYSTEM

By CBR Staff Writer

First Virtual Holdings Inc is rewriting its FVIPS Internet payment system to integrate directly into Microsoft Corp’s Merchant Server and should be ready this spring. The company uses what is called Virtual PIN numbers instead of actual credit card numbers to identify consumers, which is said to be more secure than transmitting card numbers over the Internet; consumers use electronic mail with their Virtual PIN number to confirm their purchases, and the actual card number is then transmitted over a secure private network.
