Venerable Unix application Pine (Program for Internet News & Email) has entered version 4.00. This is the first integer release of Pine since 3.00 in 1992. Since its inception at the University of Washington in 1989, Pine has always emphasized ever-present command menus and high tolerance for user errors; new features in 4.00 include hierarchical folder collections and the ability to recognize URLs and launch a browser to link to sites on the web. Pine still doesn’t support ‘kill files’ or offline operations. Nor was the launch entirely problem-free: the Usenet newsgroup comp.mail.pine buzzed with requests for help in compiling the program on various Unix platforms.
