Finjan Software Ltd, originally of Tel Aviv, Israel, but now also holed up in Santa Clara, California has decided to offer a stripped down version of its Java content screening software, called SurfinCheck that takes a lower resolution scan of incoming Java applets and ActiveX controls compared to its high-end SurfinGate product. Finjan is hoping channel partners will take it up and develop the product further. And this week at Networld+Interop in Las Vegas, the company will do what any self-respecting fledgling software company must do, and that is unveil a software developer’s kit (SDK) for vendors to write extensions to its firewall and content inspection products and include them in their own offerings via APIs included in the SDK. SurfinCheck stands sentry at the gateway to a corporate network and scans for what the company calls potentially hostile behavior, as well as a choice of user-defined names, origin or characteristics to block. SurfinCheck costs $700 for 10 users, compared with SurfinGate’s $6,250 for 50 users. At the moment the SDK is only available to the nine-member Finjan Java Security Alliance (JSA) partner program, which includes all the major firewall companies such as Raptor Systems, Check Point Software, as well as Trusted Information Systems, Digital Equipment Corp, Milkyway Networks and Secure Computing. The idea of it is to integrate Finjan’s software with other vendor’s offerings, so an SDK would seem to be pretty essential.
