Not too much has been heard of the FileNet optical document storage system since Olivetti announced it for the European market at the end of 1984 – indeed the originator, FileNet Corp, Costa Mesa, California, has announced plans for its own European subsidiaries to complement the marketing done by Olivetti. But the Italian has now won a significant coup in the UK by persuading Lloyds Bank Plc – which traditionally prefers to buy all of its computer equipment from IBM, to install a UKP500,000 FileNet system to automate the storage, retrieval, correspondent bank and customer enquiry handling of up to 8,000 daily documents in its international banking division. The first phase of the system is on-line at Lloyd’s Birmingham base and comprises two document entry stations, a 64-disk optical storage jukeboxes, six image stations with IBM 3270 emulation, a tape drive and laser printer.
