Claiming the first VLSI-based Fibre Distributed Data Interface bridge for IEEE 802.3 networks, Fibronics (UK) Ltd is launching the FX8210. The bridge, which incorporates the SuperNet chip set from Advanced Micro Devices Ltd, provides an interconnection of IEEE 802.3 Ethernet networks over a 100Mbits-per-second fibre optic FDDI ring system. The Basingstoke, Hampshire-based company claims the FX8210 is transparent to DECNet, TCP/IP, XNS and ISO protocols; targets will include CAD/CAM applications and the DEC market.
