FiberTower, a wireless backhaul services provider, and Zayo Group, a provider of telecom and Internet infrastructure and carrier neutral colocation services, have signed a multi-year agreement to lease 2,500 fibre miles of dark fibre on a long-term basis with an option to lease additional fibre.

Zayo Fiber Solutions (ZFS), the dark fibre focused business unit of Zayo, will provide FiberTower with connectivity to existing on-net sites and will also build to off-net sites.

The company said the ZFS has over 8,500 route miles of dark fibre network serving 40 markets in 20 states.

FiberTower president and chief executive officer Kurt Van Wagenen said their enhanced relationship with ZFS provides cost-effective, long term access to their dark fibre footprint, enabling them to better support the backhaul needs of their customers.

ZFS president Matt Erickson said the telecom and Internet infrastructure service they provide, dark fibre, acts as a key building block that allows their customers to cost effectively support the continued rapid growth in wireless, video, data networks and the Internet.
