FERRANTI HOPING TO SHED MANUFACTURING EMPLOYEES BUT CONTINUE TO RECRUIT SOFTWARE AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERS

Ferranti Plc reckons that the 8,000 strong workforce of its Ferranti Computer Systems unit includes about 500 too many manufacturing employees, and it hopes to shed that number by year-end while continuing to recruit on the software and systems engineering side: the company says it may have to declare redundancies as well as relying on a hiring freeze, and City analysts are reading trouble in the computer business into the announcement.
