The US Federal Communications Commission has decided to allow the Baby Bells and other telephone companies to carry television programs over their cables, but has not yet decided whether they should be allowed to be involved in program creation or will be confined to publishing for others: GTE Corp, Ameritech Corp, Bell Atlantic Corp and Pacific Telesis Group Inc are all keen to get into the business and see the video dial tone system as a way of funding the cost of adding broadband capability to their networks; needless to say, existing cable television companies are aghast at the idea of competition from the deep-pocketed Bells.
