Farallon Computing Inc is set to launch a version of its Timbuktu remote control software that will bridge the worlds of the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows. The Emeryville, California company made its name with Timbuktu, which enabled Macintosh users to view the screens of remote Macs and control them over local network or dial-up links. Now the company is set to launch a version that performs the same functions for Windows, but most innovatively, enables Mac and Windows users to view and control each others’ machines. Users in the US that have previewed the software report that it is robust and they seem generally enthusiastic about its capabilities. Apart from the ability to open a window containing the other machine’s screen, and to control it, the utility provides Windows users with other benefits such as a character-based version of the Apple Chooser, which enables them to pick Macintosh printers. It also offers the ability to cut and paste data between Mac and Windows applications, providing a simple means of data interchange.
