Facebook’s mobile revolution

The social network is still on the up thanks to mobile apps and ads.

By Claire Vanner

Facebook’s latest quarterly results have come as a shock to some in the wake of Princeton University’s report that the social network is on the brink of losing the majority of its users.

As well as being up in profit, the social network saw a rise in users with both increases being due to the mobility of Facebook.
53% of the social network’s revenue came from mobile advertising in the last quarter of 2013, up 23% on the same period the year before.

Facebook saw a significant growth in its mobile users, with mobile daily active users rising to 556 million, up 8% from the third quarter. Mobile monthly active users increased to 945m, up 8.1% from the third quarter.

The graphs below illustrate Facebook’s ever increasing push on the mobile arena and how it is benefitting them.

Facebook still remains the most downloaded free social app on both the App Store and Google Play, indicating its staying power.
Facebook Messenger and Facebook’s full app still rank as the sixth and fifteenth most downloaded apps respectively on the entire App Store, according to app analysts App Annie.

The apps have even more resilience in the Google Play charts with the full Facebook app ranking as the most downloaded free app and, as with the App Store, the Facebook Messenger app sits in sixth place.

So long as users continue to download Facebook’s mobile apps and remain constant, Facebook can hope to see a continued increase in revenue and maintain its level of active users.
