Facebook is expected to release a new photo viewer soon that allows users to browse images quickly without losing their place on the site.

The social networking company initially announced the change in look and functionality on 10 February on Twitter. It said it will take a "few weeks" to reach all of Facebook’s 500 million users.

The update includes a number of changes.

Instead of loading a separate page for each photograph when a photo is selected, the new photo viewer opens in a lightbox over the page. Users can then scroll through all the photos in that particular album by using the arrows on either side of the picture. This includes photos posted to the Wall.

A "like" and "comment" buttons are placed at the bottom right of the photo box, and the comment box sits directly below the photo.

Users can tag, share and download the photo with the help of buttons.

The company is making the upgrade after it carried out a number of tests to find a better photo experience for its users.

The company said over 100 million photos are uploaded in its site every day.
