By CBR Staff Writer

Facebook through its Open Graph initiative is allowing users to share whatever they are reading online with their friends.

The social networking firm had announced in September at F8 that it was developing a new app for its media partners to allow various newspapers like the Independent, the Guardian and the New York Times to know which articles of theirs were being read by Facebook users.

Facebook, stating that the Open Graph has been a success, said its results show that Guardian app now reaches four million monthly active users, of whom most are aged 24 and under, according to Tech Radar. The Washington Post app has 3.5m active users, with 83% of them being under 35 years. The Independent has about 1 million readers for its app. Yahoo News has also seen a 600% increase in traffic.

The most read news articles on Facebook till now have been the ones on Japanese earthquake and tsunami published by the New York Times

Guardian Media Group CEO Andrew Miller said that he was delighted with the results.
