Facebook poaches PayPal boss for messaging services expansion

David Marcus wants to get his hands dirty and build 'at scale'.

By Ben Sullivan

The boss of eBay’s PayPal arm will step down from the position this month to join Facebook.

David Marcus, who has been running eBay’s payment unit for the last two years, will now work on Facebook`s messaging services as vice president.

Under Marcus` command, PayPal focused on the physical payments by creating a mobile wallet for users and other point-of-sale systems for retailers.

But following Facebook’s $19bn acquisition of messaging service WhatsApp, the social network is continuing its messaging services push with Marcus’ hiring as vice president for messaging products.

Marcus said on his LinkedIn account: "I`m looking forward to getting my hands dirty again attempting to build something new and meaningful at scale."

He said that it was Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘compelling vision’ about mobile messaging that prompted him to abandon eBay for the social network.

Facebook has revealed that 12 billion messages are sent through the platform every day and 200 million people already use its new separate messaging app.
