Facebook could block content in "some countries" as it believes that it has faced uncomfortable positions over "too much, maybe, free speech."
A lobbyist for the company Adam Connor told the Wall Street Journal, "Maybe we will block content in some countries, but not others."
Connor added, "’We are occasionally held in uncomfortable positions because now we’re allowing too much, maybe, free speech in countries that haven’t experienced it before."
The are rumours that Facebbok is planning to enter the Chinese market in collaboration with a local partner. Bloomberg has reported that Facebook has already discussed with potential partners about a deal.
At present, Facebook is blocked in China. To neter the Chinese market, Facebook will have to comply with China’s Internet censorship system, which includes handing over user data to the Chinese government.
Facebook has confirmed Conner, 25, worked for the company but offered no further comment.
Mark Zuckerberg has said in the past that he is keen to take Facebook to China. Last year, he even said that he was learning Mandarin Chinese everyday. Late last year, Zuckerberg was pictured with Chinese search site Baidu CEO Robin Li.
