Facebook has developed a new sympathise button that would act as an alternative to the current like button in some cases.
The new button would be automatically displayed when a user chooses negative emotions from Facebook’s list of feelings in a status update.
According to the social media network, the button was developed as part of an internal project and the company has no plans to launch it yet.
Facebook software engineer Dan Muriello said another engineer had worked on a hackathon project a while back to change the like button to sympathise.
"A lot of people were very excited. But we made a decision that it was not exactly the right time to launch that product," Muriello said.
The button was developed after many issues raised that regarded the use of a like button for certain status updates as inappropriate.
