Facebook has acquired Beluga, a group messaging technology start-up founded by former Google employees.
Ben Davenport, Lucy Zhang and Jonathan Perlow had launched the company last year.
The co-founders of the start-up for mobile phones said in its website that the service would remain unaffected by the acquisition and that the three main developers of the service were eager to work in the new team.
Beluga allows users to send group messages, photos and location information across multiple platforms.
For Facebook, which has been focused on mobile services of late, the acquisition is an addition to the series of small start-ups teh social networking site has purchased over the past year.
Facebook said the Beluga team will continue their vision for groups and mobile communication as part of Facebook.
Beluga said they are excited to continue to build their vision for mobile group messaging as part of the Facebook team.
Beluga said, "Beluga and Facebook are committed to create new and better ways to communicate and share group experiences."
"For now, Beluga will continue to function as it does today."
Financial details of the transaction were not announced.
