The Federal Aviation Administration has given the IBM 3073 mainframes at the center of a Y2K storm a clean bill of health – despite warnings from IBM Corp that they should be replaced (CI No 3,329). The machines, used to track aircraft’s flightpaths between airports at 20 centers across the country, are a vital link in the American air traffic control network. The FAA has been testing the mainframes since the start of this year and an FAA administrator, talking to the Washington Post said that the authority is confident that the systems will transition the millennium in a routine manner.
