Tobii, a Swedish technology company, has introduced a laptop computer that can be controlled by the human eye at the CeBIT technology fair, Hannover, Germany.
The technology, believed to be the first in the world, lets users work with the laptop such as shifting windows, zoom in and out, play music and scroll pages, by using eye movements such as blinking.
One of the important use of the technology could be in energy saving as the computer goes into power saving mode when the user is not looking at the monitor. Other places where the laptop could be used are in gaming, medicine and vehicles.
The eye tracking technology works by keeping a track of the exact position of users’ eyes.
Tobii Technology CEO Henrick Eskilsson said the event marked an important step in bringing eye-tracking gadgets to consumer products.
The breakthrough is the result of a research carried out at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, in 2001.
Tobii North America general manager Barbara Barclay said, "We anticipate that people will be extremely excited to be able to control their computer with their eyes."
