What do you do when one search engine just isn’t enough? Like Apple’s controversial Sherlock tool (CI No 3,491), the latest utility to come out of Infoseek Corp is a downloadable application which polls multiple search engines and aggregates the results. The company quotes NPD Online Research statistics to the effect that 77% of web users use multiple search sites to obtain information. Even so, it’s hardly a mark of great faith in Infoseek’s own search engine. There are other benefits to moving application power off the server: with local processing cycles, Infoseek can provide background downloading, let users view results randomly or sequentially and highlight the original search terms. Co-branded versions of Express are being distributed through USA Today, TV Guide, the Weather Channel, DejaNews, CMP, IDG, the San Jose Mercury News and Weather Underground.
