NetBeans 4.0, an open source project, provides expanded support for Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) Mobile Device Profile (MIDP) 2.0, Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) 1.1 and J2ME Wireless Toolkit (WTK) 2.2.

The framework also builds on JavaServer Pages (JSP), Java servlet extension and Java Specification Request (JSR) 45 compliance Java Standard Tag Library support, which Sun said supports full Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) development capabilities including Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) components.

Sun, meanwhile, has launched a beta for the J2EE Wireless Toolkit. Included are APIs for Wireless Messaging, 3D graphics, PDA and Bluetooth.
