Evergreen Technologies Inc has unveiled prototype PCI cards that upgrade Intel Pentium I based PCs to the Intel’s latest Pentium III chip levels, a leap from 75 MHz to more than 500 MHz. The AcceleraPCI for Coppermine will be released in the first quarter next year and will be aimed at corporates which want to upgrade their PCs without downtime or having to reinstall software. Evergreen says that the cards can be installed in under 15 minutes without any professional assistance. The privately-held Corvallis, Oregon company already has one version of AcceleraPCI available, which upgrades Pentium I Celeron chips to 433 MHz with 64 Megabytes of memory and costs 259 pounds ($417). A second version, the Burst Mode edition, will be ready from January giving video card and graphics card compatibility.
