EVEREX SYSTEMS HAS THE NEW 80386-BASED STEP 386/20 PC

By CBR Staff Writer

Everex Systems Inc, Fremont, California is poking Charlie at Compaq Computer Corp, reckoning that its new 80386-based Step 386/20 personal computer runs at 5 MIPS and is the fastest 386 box yet available – but sells for up to 30% less than the Compaq Deskpro 386/20: key to the speed is a proprietary Advanced Memory Management Architecture, which enables the amount of cache to be expanded according to the size of main memory; the Step 386 – the first Everex computer to be sold under its own name, comes with 1Mb 20MHz CPU with zero wait-state operation, 64Kb cache expandable to 256Kb, 1:1 interleave hard and floppy disk controller, front access to 5 storage devices at $4,400.
