We always thought that the US was a bit previous in so liberally approving the French and German governments investing in Sprint Corp ahead of their even starting to liberalize home markets, and now US Acting Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky seems to have woken up. She voiced concern yesterday at signs that some European countries are backsliding on promises to liberalize their telecommunications markets, and singled out Spain, which has said it will not liberalize its market until 2003, Germany, where the parliament has failed to pass telecommunications market reforms, and France, which has yet to give assurances that its telecommunications monopoly will not distort competition.
